After a highly successful preview, the much-awaited exhibit Classic Sanso is now set to formally open at the Podium on Tuesday, 21 February 2012 at 6:30PM.

Classic Sanso opened at Galerie Stephanie last February 9 to a select group of art collectors, critics, and friends of the artist. The quaint but successful gathering had the artist himself meeting his guests. On Tuesday, February 21 at the Atrium of the Podium Mall on ADB Avenue, the exhibit opens to the public—allowing for the full appreciation of the immense talents of one of the creative titan in Philippine art. Classic Sanso is witness to a remarkable show of the internationally acclaimed Spanish-Filipino painter Juvenal Sanso of works revisiting his earlier themes and motifs. Known in the past decade for his highly regarded Moderno series – exploring the intense, highly colorful, and creative interpretations of particular views and sceneries he found memorable – the intrepid Presidential Medal of Merit awardee taps deeper into the realm of his memories to show us works that follow the conceptual line that has made him the pre-eminent Philippine visual artist today. His depictions of landscapes, seascapes, and floral scenes culled from his vast and well-travelled memories radiates with an energy and dynamism that is both alluring and captivating. His use of water is demonstrative of his singular ability to capture its many characteristics, from the vibrancy of tides to the tranquility of lakes.

Classic Sanso contains 40 rare works culled from the artist’s studio on canvas and paper. Classic Sanso shows Sanso at his very best—full of life, energy, and passion for his art.

A renowned painter, Juvenal Sanso is one of the best-known members of the Philippine Modernist movement. Having graduated from the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, he has as his contemporaries National Artists Jose Joya, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, and Napoleon Abueva (his batchmate in UP). His teachers were National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino. A foremost master, Sanso has had a long and stellar career capped by a number of awards and recognitions including a King’s Cross of Isabella knighthood from the King of Spain, membership into the Order of Chevalier from the French Government, and a Presidential Medal of Merit from the Republic of the Philippines. His works are represented in the collections of some 40 museums in the world, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleaveland Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Rosenwald National Gallery of Washington, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. His collectors include the Rothchild Family, Nelson Rockefeller, Vincent Price, Elsa Schiaperelli, Jean Cacteau, and many prominent American, European, and Filipino families.

Desire, Ennui, Anxiety: Marcel Antonio at Yuchengco Museum, January of 2012

In July of 2010, the poet V.I.S. de Veyra posted a blog essay on the art of Marcel Antonio titled “Blue Funk’d Stories: The Expanding Art of Marcel Antonio” (read at http://partycrashingangle.blogspot.com/2010/07/blue-funked-silent-stories-expanding_26.html) and coined the phrase-tag Blue Funk Erotica for Antonio’s art.

De Veyra described Blue Funk Erotica as 1) unsmiling faces-derived figurative drama (primarily portraiture, then), 2) replete of appropriations or art-historical quotes, 3) suggestive (but only suggestive) of a narrative, 4) quasi-rebellious towards rigid allusions and painting titles’ guidance, 5) unpainterly expressionist, 6) of an in-a-trance mood as against a happy one, and 7) conscriptive of the painting viewer as peeper. “This erotica should stay around and keep us entranced,” the poet-critic wrote, “being not so much one that tickles the groin as a kind that promotes the understanding that every face, gesture, object, color, and shape is a secret sex object and clandestine true story waiting to be told.” But also debunking a previous simplistic tag on Antonio’s art as “narrative expressionist,” de Veyra wrote: “In Antonio’s case, his blue funkism's ‘de-expression’, or ‘dis-expression’ and narrative confusion through the mannerisms of narrative imagery and titling, seems to be a produce of a Russian Formalist narrative bent to ‘defamiliarize’ images and shapes towards a higher enigma. Thus his refusal to ‘express’.”

The abovementioned blog started a dialogue between Antonio’s art as well as intent (of unintent) and de Veyra’s reading, culminating in a late-2011 collection titled “Desire, Ennui, Anxiety” which shall be shown this coming Feb 6 to 25 at the Yuchengco Museum.

This title for Antonio’s new series does not so much signal a change in his art’s direction as clarify where de Veyra’s reading is right and where it needs to be tweaked. For instance, while de Veyra opts for a Barthesian “variety of narrative possibilities,” Antonio’s pragmatic knowledge of his audience allows/welcomes two basic approaches to his art.

The one approach favours rigid symbolist readings, especially as Antonio is himself attracted to the “monumental” (Antonio’s term) figure common among utopian-art compositions (of Wagnerian glorifications, classical idealism, Nazi art, Stalinist totalitarian art, socialist realism, etc.) as well as in advertising art or the idealizations of soft porn.

But, for the other approach, Antonio acknowledges that de Veyra is right about his—Antonio’s—own efforts to frustrate, so to speak, all symbolist and narrative approaches, via experimentations with juxtapositions/relations and eclectic allusions. These experimentations, appropriations, and art-history quotes result in a dehumanized atmosphere, involving such stuff as machine esthetics and the usual facial expressions of ennui and boredom, all moving towards Antonio’s intended postmodernist multiplicity of meanings. But the final result on each single canvas is an invite to a pseudo-narrative half-aware of this pseudo-ness, welcoming while parodying the various cultural and moral significations possible to professional and popular semiotics.

In this sense, Antonio’s art would be self-described as anxious about the unknown, desirous of knowledge as a matter of course but likewise celebrating the ennui of knowledge’s elusivity, even the charm of that ennui itself alone. Ennui as both springboard and object of desire, then, visually fulfilled or illustrated on an Antonio-esque drama field.

A final stamp to this anti-narrative effort to “recover the sensation of life” (Victor Shklovsky) is the artist’s devotion to the coloration of Diego Velázquez or Chagall as well as the latent abstract geometrics beneath all his pseudo-narrative stagings.

V.I.S. de Veyra joins Antonio in this exhibit with fourteen new poems printed in the exhibition catalogue.

I was waiting for Super 8 for about a month already and i saw the early trailers, was involved in the viral campaigns. I was amped to go and experience another great JJ Abrams film.

Last night i got to change to watch it on DVD, I started on a high then at about half way my opinion of the movie had gone down a lot.

The best way to describe Super 8 is take ET and put it in a blender with Cloverfield. But it just doesn't feel like it blended how it should have.


The are too main stories...little kids having adventures, growing up and falling in love. Other the other side a monster attacks the city cloverfield style. The kid parts are filmed in a very ET 80's cinemas style. The alien parts are modern with CGI and at times it honestly doesn't feel like you are watching the same film.

Don't even get me started on inconsistencies of this movie... like a man driving into a speeding train derailing it and SURVIVING? lol... seriously?

Super 8 feels very much like a fan made dedication to Spielberg but it just didn't quite work.

I will say the kids were excellent actors and I would have been more entertained just watching a movie about them with no alien. Elle Fanning out acted every one, even the adult cast. She proved to be an amazing young actress portraying a maturity far beyond her age. But with the other characters I had no real emotional attachment to them. I didn't feel sorry for the alien, was I supposed to.

I am simply a movie buff and to me this was not anything special. I'm surprised by all these 10/10 reviews, because this movie had nothing new that you haven't seen in 50 other films. I think it would have made 2 great separate films, where they could have taken their time to build the story. Super 8 not that super at all!

"In the Philippines, the term gay has been used loosely to include homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, crossdressers, and effeminate men. Filipino gays are mostly stereotyped as effeminate, crossdressers, hairdressers, camp and ridiculed.

Bakla or Bading, a derogatory Filipino word for gay, is commonly used. Tibo or tomboy has a similar function, and refers to lesbians, usually of the butch and masculine type. A more benign slang word for gay men is billy boy. For Filipino gays, the Tagalog phrase "paglaladlad ng kapa" (literally means "unfurling of the cape") refers to the coming-out process. Although gays and lesbians are generally tolerated within Philippine society, there are still widespread cases of discrimination.

Swardspeak is a vernacular language derived from Englog (English-Tagalog) and is used by a number of gay Filipinos. It uses elements from Tagalog, English, and Spanish, and some are from Nippongo, as well as celebrities' names and signature brands, giving them new meanings in the context of this unique language. A unique trait of swardspeak is that it immediately identifies the speaker as homosexual, making it easy for people of that orientation to signal to each other in a place where such tendencies are not easy to display (ie in the Philippines). This creates an exclusive world among its speakers and helps them to resist cultural assimilation.

By using swardspeak, Filipino gay men are able to resist the dominant culture of their area and create a space of their own. The language is constantly changing, with old phrases becoming obsolete and new phrases frequently entering everyday usage, reflecting changes in their culture and also maintaining exclusivity. The dynamic nature of the language refuses to cement itself in single culture and allows for more freedom in expression among its speakers. Words and phrases can be created out of reaction to popular trends and create alternatives to a strictly defined lifestyle. By these characteristics, swardspeak creates a dissident group without any ties to geographical, linguistic, or cultural restrictions, allowing its speakers to shape the language as appropriate to the times. In this way, the language is "mobile", and is simultaneously part of a larger community but also open to more specific or local meanings."

Gay men in the Philippines, especially those who are out, speak to each other using a colorful language that they invented, mixing English, Tagalog, Visayan, and sometimes even Japanese. Those who would hear (or read) Filipino gay slang for the first time feel like they are deciphering a Da Vinci Code.

Just like any slang, Filipino gay lingo started out with replacing certain words with another term. For example, we say "award" instead of "embarrassed." They say "bet" instead of "boy crush." Eventually, gays learn to speak with a colorful vocabulary, using certain key rules:

The J Law - Replacing the first letter of a word with "J."
Example:
Jowa - Asawa (husband, boyfriend)
Jonta - Punta (to go to a place)
Jubis - Obese

The KY/ NY Law - Replacing the first letter with "Ky" or "Ny."
Example:
Kyota - Bata (Children)
Nyorts - A pair of shorts

The Name Game - Replacing a word with a name (usually that of a celebrity) that sounds like it.
Example:
Julie Yap-Daza - Huli (to get caught)
Gelli de Belen - Jealous
Carmi Martin - Karma
Tom Jones - Tomguts or gutom (hungry)

Plus - Adding an extra syllable, extra letters, or extra words to create a different word.
Example:
Crayola - Cry
Thunder Cats - Tanda (an old person; the slang is often called to an old gay man)
Pagoda Cold Wave Lotion - Pagod (tired)

The use of gay lingo was first used to avoid having other people hear what you are talking about, especially when it comes to sex. This is also a means of defying the cultural norms and creating an identity of their own.

Gay speak evolves really fast, with obsolete words and phrases being rewritten and replaced especially when non-gays learn what it means. Saying "Ano'ng happening" (What are your plans for tonight) would make you associated with the 1980s.

This language defines the Philippine gay culture, and it would probably stay that way for quite a while.

After a long day of work at the office, my meal normally is set towards going home already to have a “homy” meal with my family. But one experience that is worth telling that I want to share is the one I have with RED SWAN “homy” Restaurant. Why “homy”? As you may ask, well that is what I’m about to tell you, It is actually situated in the calm street of Scout Santiago, Quezon City.

At the first I was really hesitant when my wife ask me to go there because my mind is already set towards going home, but of course she insisted and so the story begun from there. On our way to the restaurant I kept on asking my wife why we are heading towards a residential area, bearing in my mind that we might be lost. But all my doubts vanished once we were inside the restaurant, because I was really astonished by the homy feeling that is suddenly bought to my sense.

I was really relieved because I thought I was home already. And aside from that that the surprise did not just end there, even if we have waited for a couple of minutes for our orders, I tell you it’s really worth the wait. After I have tasted their best seller meal Slow Baked Spareribs & Pasta Ala Pomodero my palate was automatically captured because the meal was very unique and tasty. Can you imagine a back rib steak meal deboned and ready to eat, really very satisfying and delightful isn’t? One tip, if you want to enjoy it to the fullest ask for an extra red sauce that goes with the steak, bet you will love it!

I am highly recommending this restaurant. You can also try their pasta meal that goes with tasty garlic breads, special no extender burger meals, zesty green salads and other great tasting dishes. Another tip you can either choose mash potato, breads, plain or yellow rice for your carbo.
